IRS Looking for Taxpayers Missing Economic Stimulus Payments

The Service is making a concerted effort to locate taxpayers across the country who are missing some 279,000 ESP checks worth approximately $163 million (in addition to those missing roughly 100,000 regular refund checks returned as undeliverable by the U.S. Postal Service). Those who are owed stimulus checks MUST update their addresses with IRS by November 28 because of a statutory requirement for the checks to be sent by December 31, 2008. Interestingly, the undeliverable stimulus checks average $583. If you (or someone you know) don’t know whether you received the ESP, the Where’s My Stimulus Payment? web application is the place to check.

According to IRS, the regular income tax refund checks returned to IRS average nearly $1,000. The agency re-sends the check as soon as a taxpayer updates his/her address, which can be done directly through the Where’s My Refund? online application.
